Cardiff City Academy

Llanrumney Sports Complex is located in the East of Cardiff and is now the official home to Cardiff City Football Clubs Academy Team.

CMB successfully secured the contract to deliver this project as Principal Contractor back in November 2020, and with planning permission received 2 years later, we successfully handed over the project in less than 12 months of construction time to a satisfied client.

The 16-acre site consists of 5 grass pitches, 2 goal keeping areas, an outdoor 3G, reception area, changing rooms, a restaurant, boardroom, player care zone, communal staff office, an analysis suite, 2 x classrooms, a family zone, a staff changing area and finally the famous repurposed Dr Who building which is now the main 60m x 40m indoor arena, named after the legendary Peter Whittingham.

We proudly attended the grand opening of the Academy facility in September of last year. As Principal Contractor on this project, it was an honour to see the doors open to this state-of-the-art academy facility which will be instrumental in investing and enabling grassroots football in the city.

In attendance, was CMB Managing Director and Cardiff City FC Director Steve Borley, CCFC First Team Manager Erol Bulut, Leader of Cardiff Council Huw Thomas, CCFC Director Ken Choo, Academy Manager Gavin Chesterfield and many more.

These facilities will be vital in investing in the future of Cardiff’s youth and will hopefully be a steppingstone in creating the future Aaron Ramsey’s of the next generation. Aaron himself visited the Sports Complex the week of its opening to meet some of the children from the CCFC Foundation and to have a tour of the new Academy.

Steve Borley commented on Ramsey’s involvement in the Club and its Academy, saying:

"It's always great to see youngsters coming through because every City fan wants to see one of their own… Aaron has an affinity to this club and has demonstrated that and he is going to do a great job of bringing through more of those youngsters, whether they are nine or nineteen.”

CMB Project Director, Bertie Borley, commented on the project saying:

“I was very pleased to oversee the construction of this project on behalf of CMB, as Llanrumney is where my family and I grew up. It’s great to see my local community have these fantastic state-of-the-art facilities to benefit future sports teams and the city of Cardiff and for CMB to be so involved in overseeing the construction of these facilities has been an honour and a privilege.”

A big thank you to all those who were involved in not only the grand opening of this new sports complex but also those who played a part in developing and constructing the facilities, including: South Wales Sports Grounds, SSS Fabrication, Korbuild, Puma Floors, Poplar Insulation, Securalec, Bagnalls, Collinsons, Glass Facades and NC Ceramics.
