Tredegar Primary School

Ysgol Gymraeg Tredegar, located on Chartist Way, Tredegar, is a 210-place seedling school with co-located childcare. The project has been fully funded by the Welsh Government through the Welsh Medium Capital Grant.

Tredegar Primary is a newly constructed single-storey school, originally undertaken by ISG Construction and subsequently completed by Tilbury Douglas Construction following ISG’s collapse at the end of 2024. The new school benefits from a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a forest play area, a growing orchard, wild-flower meadows, a play area, solar panels and electric vehicle charging points. The project also includes a full Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), increasing the site’s water retention capacity by 30% and delivering long-term environmental benefits.

Having been awarded the £960k Mechanical contract in early 2024, CMB commenced work on site later that year. Following the uncertainty surrounding the collapse of ISG, Tilbury Douglas reopened the site for all supply chain members promptly after securing the contract and progress was quickly made to achieve handover to a satisfied client at the beginning of December 2025 – ahead of schedule and in time for the new January term.

Some of the works CMB carried out included:

  • We provided heating to the building via underfloor heating pipework supplied with low-pressure hot water generated by externally mounted air-source heat pumps.

  • Fresh-air provision and extract ventilation was achieved through mechanical heat-recovery ventilation (MVHR) systems, which supply conditioned outside air to occupied spaces and removes vitiated air to atmosphere.

  • The kitchen and food preparation areas were ventilated by a dedicated supply air handling unit and a separate extract fan connected to a ceiling-mounted canopy.

  • Each toilet area was equipped with a dedicated extract fan operating at a background trickle rate. The fans increase to boost speed upon detection of occupant presence via passive infra-red (PIR) sensors, and revert to trickle mode after a timed run-on period once the space is unoccupied.

  • Domestic hot water is generated via a heat exchanger served by the air-source heat pump primary system.

  • Above-ground drainage systems collect and discharge wastewater from sanitary fixtures, toilet areas, and beverage stations.

  • A Building Management System (BMS) provides automatic control of the mechanical systems, monitoring system operation, reporting alarms and faults, and logging operational data for analysis when required.

  • Cooling within the IT Hub is supplemented by a DX fan coil unit with an externally mounted condenser.

Chris Edmonds, Regional Director – South Wales at Tilbury Douglas, commented:

“The team has worked tirelessly and collaboratively with the customer and supply chain to ensure the project not only remained on track, but was completed ahead of schedule.

“Adding to this achievement, the project was recognised at the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards, with the team invited to attend a national awards ceremony later this year, reflecting the high standards demonstrated throughout delivery.”
