We’re pleased to have recently had an article published on CMB via Construction & Civil Engineering’s Magazine. The article highlights the company’s growth since its inception, our expansion into different sectors, growth we have achieved in the last few years and what we anticipate for the future.

Regional Managing Director, John Green, commented in the article saying:

“Our Founder, Steve Borley, established the company with his wife, Christine, in 1992 with just £250. Over the last 32 years, from an initial plan of turning over £100,000 in the first year of trading, the business has grown to achieve £100 Million turnover this year.

We directly employ a significant number of people with nearly 200 staff members across the group. Honouring Steve’s ethos of ‘train and retain’, we are dedicated to the training and personal development of our staff across all levels, with a particular focus on apprenticeships – empowering employees to progress through the ranks of our organisation.

Currently, we are carrying out our most technically challenging project to date, and it is being led by five individuals who all started working at CMB as apprentices. We have invested in the creation of our own training academy for apprentices – so, while many of our competitors send their apprentices to college, we have established our own training workshop to supplement the college education, setting us further apart from other construction companies. This involves our own experienced tradesmen and a former college lecturer spending two days a week teaching our apprentices different skills that go beyond what they learn in college. This helps our apprentices to develop those skills earlier and to a higher standard, which has helped them win numerous awards on a regular basis.

Our ranking among the Top 200 Companies in South Wales can also be attributed to the fact that we are not your typical contractor. We like to sell ourselves by the fact we are unique in our approach and “not like everybody else”. Whether we are principal contractor or specialist sub-contractor, our approach is the same, and we operate under what we call internally a ‘no-grief’ approach. Rather than being entirely focused on costs and making profits, we prioritise quality and delivering on time as part of a team. This collaborative approach has helped us gain repeat business and maintain strong relationships with our key clients.”

With a constantly expanding team boasting a wide array of skills and talents, the scope of services we deliver matches the challenges our clients ask of us and every challenge is accepted on the basis we will always find a way.

We thank Construction & Civil Engineering for taking their time to interview our team on this story. You can read the article in full, including more on CMB’s contributions to the BBC Wales HQ in Cardiff Central Square, via the link below (see pages 30-35).
