On 25th February, students from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf competed in the regional stage of the F1 in Schools STEM Racing Competition – a national challenge bringing together young engineers, designers and innovators from across the country.
As part fop our ongoing social value contributions through the Fairwater Community Campus project, CMB/BESL proudly sponsored Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in their first time entering the competition. Initiatives like this provide invaluable real-world experience and play an important role in inspiring future careers in engineering and construction for young people.
With 52 teams competing on the day, the regional event provided a major platform to showcase months of preparation, technical development and teamwork. In an outstanding achievement for their debut year, the team (‘Eclipse’) secured 3rd place overall, a remarkable result in such a competitive field.
Eclipse applied for the competition at the end of last summer and have been working towards the event ever since. The initiative was led by Ela, who introduced the programme to the school and took on the role of Project Manager. Evan supported the technical development as Design Engineer, refining the CAD work and ensuring the car met regulations, while Owen focused on aerodynamics and manufacturing requirements. Garmon developed the team’s visual identity and oversaw the car’s finish and assembly. Alongside this, Guto and Osian managed sponsorship, finance and marketing, securing backing and coordinating the team’s presence throughout the process.
From design and manufacturing to branding and presentation, the project required collaboration across multiple disciplines. On the day, the students confidently presented their work, explaining the technical decisions behind their car and demonstrating a strong understanding of engineering principles. Their professionalism and abilities were reflected in their 3rd place finish – an impressive accomplishment at a regional level.
Although this was their first year competing, the team are already looking ahead, with ambitions to return next year and expand involvement across the school, including younger year groups.
We congratulate the Glantaf team on their hard work and well-deserved success, and look forward to supporting their continued progress.
